Bio

Mary Jane Blige was born on January 11, 1971, at Fordham Hospital in the Belmont neighborhood in the Bronx, New York City. At just 18 years old, she was signed to Uptown Records as a background vocalist, making history as the label's youngest and first female artist. Her 1992 debut, What's the 411?, proved revolutionary by pioneering the blend of R&B and hip hop in mainstream pop culture. Both her debut and its acclaimed 1994 successor, My Life, were later honored with placements on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

Over her enduring career, Blige has released 15 studio albums, including four releases that climbed to the summit of the Billboard 200 chart. Her hit single "Be Without You" became a historic triumph, ruling the R&B chart for an unprecedented fifteen consecutive weeks. Reflecting her vast impact on the genre, Billboard named her the most successful female R&B/Hip-Hop artist of the preceding quarter-century in 2010. Her lasting musical legacy was cemented with her induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2024.

Alongside her musical endeavors, Blige broadened her artistic reach by building a notable acting career. She earned historic acclaim for the 2017 film Mudbound, securing Academy Award nominations for both her supporting role and the original song "Mighty River" in the very same year. She has also established a memorable presence on television through prominent roles in series such as The Umbrella Academy and Power Book II: Ghost.
