Solána Imani Rowe was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and grew up in Maplewood, New Jersey. After gaining attention with two self-released extended plays, she signed to Top Dawg Entertainment in 2013 as the label's first female artist. Under the label, she released her critically acclaimed 2017 debut album Ctrl, which placed on several year-end lists.
In the years following her debut, SZA participated in high-profile collaborations, including the top-ten singles "All the Stars" with Kendrick Lamar and "Kiss Me More" with Doja Cat. Her acclaimed second album, SOS, achieved major commercial success after its 2022 release and spent over ten weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. The album broke the record for the longest-running US top ten by a Black musician. Its single "Kill Bill" went on to top the Billboard Hot 100 and became the third best-selling song of 2023.
SZA regards songwriting as a form of self-therapy that allows her to record and resolve her struggles. Her writing style frequently displays a vulnerable, confessional, and reflective tone. Critics and musicians widely credit her with significantly influencing the landscape of contemporary R&B.
