Born in Los Angeles to Phyllis Mitchell and Lakeside musician Tyrone Griffin, Tyrone William Griffin Jr. was immersed in musical artistry from an early age. Through his father's musical connections, he crossed paths with Earth, Wind & Fire and Prince during his childhood, cultivating an enduring appreciation for soul music. He steadily honed his craft by mastering the bass guitar before branching out to drums, keyboards, guitars, and the Akai MPC workstation.
Griffin achieved his initial mainstream breakthrough after co-performing and producing rapper YG's hit 2010 single, Toot It and Boot It. His burgeoning career gained substantial momentum after he signed with Atlantic Records in 2012 and partnered with Wiz Khalifa's Taylor Gang Entertainment the following year. Broader mainstream recognition soon followed with the arrival of his 2014 debut commercial project, Beach House EP. In late 2015, he unveiled his debut studio album, Free TC, which entered the Billboard 200 at number 14.
Alongside his solo catalog, Griffin became an in-demand collaborator, contributing to prominent hits such as Fifth Harmony's Work from Home and Post Malone's chart-topping smash Psycho. His collaborative instincts also yielded full-length duo records, including MihTy with Jeremih and Cheers to the Best Memories with Dvsn. Teaming up with Kanye West as the duo ¥$, Griffin reached a new career pinnacle in 2024 when Vultures 1 became his first album to debut at number one on the Billboard 200.
