On February 9, 2025, at Super Bowl LIX held in New Orleans’ Caesars Superdome, Grammy-winning R&B singer Ledisi delivered a powerful rendition of “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often called the Black National Anthem. Dressed in a flowing white gown, she was accompanied by a choir of 125 local high school students, honoring the hymn’s 125th anniversary.

“Lift Every Voice and Sing” was originally a poem written in 1900 by James Weldon Johnson, a leader of the NAACP, and later set to music. It became a powerful anthem during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1950s and 1960s.

Ledisi, a New Orleans native, expressed her deep connection to the performance, reflecting on her journey from Holly Grove to the grand stage. She stated, “I feel like I’m in alignment with greatness to stand in this moment and sing that song.”

The inclusion of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” in Super Bowl pre-game ceremonies began in 2020, following nationwide protests advocating for racial justice. Since then, it has been featured in the Super Bowl’s pregame events.

The performance was part of a lineup celebrating Louisiana’s rich musical heritage. Other local artists included Jon Batiste, who performed the national anthem, and Trombone Shorty, who collaborated with Lauren Daigle on “America the Beautiful.”

Ledisi’s rendition was met with widespread acclaim, with many praising her vocal prowess and the emotional depth she brought to the performance. The collaboration with the youth choir added a poignant touch, symbolizing a bridge between generations and a shared commitment to the song’s enduring message of hope and resilience.
