New Music Friday: Ty Dolla $ign, Pimmie, ELIZA and More
This was a fairly busy week of music releases, with the majority of them coming in the form of singles and a few EPs and albums sprinkled in. Rather than covering every single release, I’m going to highlight some of the projects and songs that stood out to me this week. If you want to see everything that dropped, you can always check out the singles or albums pages here on the site.
One of the biggest names to release music this week was Ty Dolla $ign with his new EP girl music vol.1. Ty rarely misses when it comes to collaborations, and this project features some heavy hitters including Ronald Isley, Brandy, and Leon Thomas. The standout moment for me is “miss u 2,” where Leon Thomas absolutely shines. If you check out one track from the EP, that’s the one I’d recommend.
Another interesting release this week came from Pimmie with her debut album Don’t Come Home. The project is a quick listen at just 18 minutes across 10 tracks, with many songs clocking in around the two-minute mark or less. Despite the short runtime, the album has a unique sound that really highlights her voice. As an artist signed to OVO, I’m curious to see how her sound develops and what she releases next.
London artist ELIZA also returned this week with her album The Darkening Green, her first project in four years. The album leans heavily into an alternative R&B lane, and the sonic palette she explores works really well. It’s the type of project that feels distinctive from start to finish, and the sounds she’s cultivated here make for a really engaging listen.
On the singles side, OSA continues to impress with his new release “Mona Lisa Who?”. He’s quickly become one of my favorite artists to keep an eye on ever since I heard “N E B U L A,” and this new single keeps that streak going with smooth production and strong vocals.
Isaiah Falls also dropped a new single titled “TABOO.” Coming off his excellent EP LUCKY YOU, Falls picks up right where he left off, delivering another playlist-ready record with excellent production and songwriting.
One of my personal favorite releases this week is “Need it Bad” from Ama featuring Brent Faiyaz. This feels like a different side of Ama compared to what I’m used to hearing from her, and I’m definitely here for it. The accompanying video also helps reinforce the vibe they created with the song.
Another standout collaboration comes from Nia Smith and DESTIN CONRAD on “Tough.” DESTIN CONRAD has been on a great run lately, and this duet shows off Nia Smith’s vocal range nicely. It’s simply a high-quality record from two artists who continue to deliver.
Avara also released a new track titled “winston street.” She’s been incredibly reliable with her music lately, and this single fits perfectly into the lane she’s been developing. Her sound is relaxed, chill, and never overwhelming, making her songs easy to return to.
Another track worth mentioning is “Masquerade” from MALIA. Her voice really shines on this record, and you can feel the emotion behind her delivery. The production builds gradually as the song progresses, giving the track a beautifully simple but effective structure.
Closing out the highlights this week is “Pent Up” from Mellina Tey. Mellina continues her streak of melodic, relaxing records that carry a very distinct atmosphere. Her style has remained consistent, and that consistency is part of what makes her music so easy to enjoy.
Overall, this week delivered a solid mix of albums, EPs, and singles worth checking out. Again, if you want to see everything that dropped this week, be sure to explore the singles and albums sections here on the site.
