Faith

It’s hard to believe that Faith Evans’ debut album Faith came out thirty years ago on August 29, 1995. Thinking back on it now feels like a lifetime has passed, and in many ways, it has. When this album first dropped, I couldn’t fully appreciate the artistry the way I do now as an almost-functioning adult. With the wisdom of time, I can say with confidence that this project is one of those records that defines what 90s R&B really was.

The 90s were such a special time for R&B — an era where raw vocals, rich production, and emotional storytelling all came together in ways that continue to shape the genre today. Faith is a perfect example of that. Playing it front to back now, the album captures the essence of that moment and reminds me why so many people, myself included, hold the decade in such high regard musically.

Of course, the two songs that most people immediately remember are “Soon as I Get Home” and “You Used to Love Me.” Both are absolute classics that have stood the test of time and still hit with the same emotional weight they did back in the 90s. But this album isn’t just about a couple of singles. For me, it’s one of those rare projects you can play in its entirety without skipping. Each track flows into the next, showcasing Faith’s voice and artistry in a way that still feels authentic and fresh three decades later.

Listening back today, Faith doesn’t just bring nostalgia — it brings an appreciation for real musical artistry. It’s a reminder of what makes R&B timeless: heartfelt lyrics, powerhouse vocals, and production that perfectly frames the emotion of the songs.

If you haven’t gone back to revisit Faith in a while, you owe it to yourself to do so. Thirty years later, it’s still a flawless listen and a testament to the magic of 90s R&B.
